A Guide to Getting Outside in Downtown Fargo
Posted by Anna Erickson on May 22nd 2020
The sun is out, and Fargonians are more than ready to crawl out of hibernation and enjoy the beautiful weather. Here in Fargo, 60 degrees is shorts weather and we’re all itching to escape quarantine for some good old fashioned outdoor entertainment. Although some places remain closed and large gatherings are still a no no, Fargo still has a lot to offer and we’re here for it.
Here are some ideas on how to get outside, enjoy this beautiful weather, and keep supporting our local favorites in Downtown Fargo.
Go for a walk.
One of the simplest ways to enjoy Downtown Fargo right now is to go for a walk (or run if you’re into that.) Even with all the construction that goes on during spring and summer here, the walking paths are still accessible for pedestrians! We love walking along Broadway and looping through Roberts Alley for that Fargo feeling and the best window shopping around. Nothing goes better with a walk than a Fresh Fruit Boba drink from Teaberry or a cone from Silver Lining. We also recommend taking a trip to the paths down by the Red River for a more relaxed scenic route. Don’t forget your four legged friend!
Tour Downtown’s Street Art
While on your walk, why not stop and enjoy some local artist’s work? Downtown Fargo is littered with street art that makes a great photo op or scenery. Check out the guide below and follow the rainbow route for a fun outdoor activity!
Downtown’s benches and utility boxes display local artists’ work as well. How many can you find?
Enjoy a Sweet Treat
Let’s be honest, Fargo summers can get hot. What better way to cool off than a sweet snack? Downtown has some of the best treats to help you beat the heat! If you’re looking for an energy boost, an iced latte from Atomic Coffee, Third Drop, Youngblood, or Twenty Below will be right up your alley. Just down the street you can enjoy a rolled ice cream from Tea & Crepe or sip on a fresh fruit boba smoothie from Teaberry. Scoop n’ Dough offers traditional ice cream sundaes with a cookie-dough-twist while Silver Lining is scooping a rotating flavor menu of fresh locally made ice creams! Bonus – they even have treats for your furry friend!

Dine on a Rooftop or Patio
One of our favorite relaxing things to do in Downtown Fargo during the summer is enjoy a bite to eat on one of the many patios and rooftops downtown. Downtown’s rooftops include Drunken Noodle/Slurp Ramen, Rhombus Guys, The HoDo, and Cowboy Jack’s. Black Waffle and Coffee Co. and Beer & Fish Co. offer indoor seating with large garage door openings if you prefer to dine inside but still enjoy the outdoor feeling.
Stop by a Food Truck
If you’d prefer a to go option, Fargo’s food trucks are where it’s at. Locals look forward to summer every year just to get their favorite food truck eats. Suna’s Egyptian Eatery, Taco Bros, Pico, Fargo Fillies, The Hot Dog Peddler, and Duchessa Gelato are a few of our favorites!

Grab a Growler to Go
Local Breweries and Cideries offer growlers and 4-packs to go as a great option to enjoy on the patio at home. Why not make a night of it and enjoy a growler fill alongside your food truck favorites for dinner? Or grab a four pack from Drekker or Wild Terra to sip on at the lake and share with friends or family. Show your Fargo pride by sipping out of our Fargo Beer Glass and sporting this Drink Local tee!
Plan a Picnic
Nestled right in downtown Fargo is Island Park, a favorite spot for locals to relax and enjoy the outdoors. A great way to spend an afternoon is having a picnic with a significant other or your friends. We recommend packing some cheese, meats, nuts, breads, and honey for a DIY cheese board. You can assemble it on the spot and graze as you go! If you’re not a picnic-packing type, head over to one of the food trucks and pick up dinner to enjoy on a picnic blanket in the park.
Relax in Your Hammock
While you’re at the park why not find a shady spot to set up a hammock for a few hours? You can take a nap, read a book, or just people watch. We can’t think of a more peaceful way to spend an afternoon. Lounge in this comfy Fargo Movie tee while you’re swinging in the trees!
Take in Fargo’s Best Views
Finally, at the end of the day when you’re almost ready to go home don’t forget to watch the sunset from one of Fargo’s greatest views. We love driving to the top of Roberts Parking Garage and taking in the downtown views. There’s no better way to enjoy this wonderful city.
